John Purakal, MD, MSc, is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine. His research interests include screening for social determinants of health, racial & ethnic disparities of emergency care, cardiovascular disease and sepsis management. He is the founding editor of SocialEMpact (www.socialEMpact.com), an educational forum for collaboration, advocacy and education related to Social Emergency Medicine. With a passion for teaching, Dr. Purakal strives to find inventive ways to educate both residents and his patients’ communities. He has a track record for developing interdisciplinary public health educational initiatives, geared at reducing gaps in knowledge in at-risk populations. Most recently, he was awarded faculty teacher of the year by the Duke University Emergency Medicine residency program.
